Side effects of machine translation10.27.08

Have you ever considered machine translation as a means of saving money? This site shows you how machine translation is inherently flawed as any literal translation of metaphoric language will produce incorrect albeit amusing results. Obviously the method of translating from English to another language and then back again is not often done in real cases, but it does offer some insight into what can go wrong, when no humans are involved in the translation process.

Watch a sentence of your choice degrade by each translation attempt, or try this quote from Faulkner's "From The Ball-Room to Hell":

"This evening there is to be a ball of unusual grandeur. The last of the season of gaiety, and the closing of the dancing-school term. Our friend will surely be present. Let us attend. What a scene of beauty, gaiety and splendor."
